1978 · The First Electronic Bulletin Board System

The first public dial-up BBS was developed by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess when they were snowed in their room during the Great Blizzard of 1978. The two began preliminary work on the Computerized Bulletin Board System designing it after a cork board at Christensen’s local computer club used for posting information. The system officially went online on 16 February and kept a count of callers, reportedly connecting 253,301 callers before it was finally retired.
