    1864 · Champs-Élysées  Avenue

    Champs-Élysées is over 6,000 feet long and over 200 feet wide. The name is French for Elysian Fields were in Greek mythology was the paradise for the dead heroes. It is one of the oldest avenues in France and is also the location of the Arc de Triomphe.

    Franco-Prussian war resulted in the loss of Alsace and Lorraine and the fall of Napoleon III. Paris Commune (1871).

    On July 19, 1870 France declared war on Prussia the south German states. The French forces were only 200,000 strong while the Prussian forces were 400,000. On September 1, 1870 the Battle of Sedan took place and Napoleon III along with 83,000 forces surrendered to the Germans. After this happened on October 7 the French minister made an escape from Paris in a balloon. Twenty days later Paris was seized.
