The statement was written as follows: ""The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."""

"While attending the play ""Our American Cousin"" in Ford's Theatre, actor John Wilkes Booth climbed up the stairs to the suite that President Abraham Lincoln and his wife resided. Once inside the suite Booth pulled out his pistol and shot The President in the head. In critical condition The President was carried out of the theatre for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, Lincoln died the following day. Abraham Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated, and his death caused a period of national mourning both in the North and South."
