Brief Life History of Charles

When Charles Haddon was born on 5 June 1837, in Québec, Canada, New France, his father, James Hadden, was 33 and his mother, Ann Laura Hannah Fitzgerald, was 25. He married Te Paea or Sophia Tahupotiki in 1864. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He died on 3 August 1924, in Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand, at the age of 87, and was buried in Weri Weri Maori Cemetery, Okaiawa, Taranaki, New Zealand.

1840

The Maori sign the Treaty of Waitangi giving control to the British in exchange for protection and guaranteed Maori possession of their lands.

1840 · New Zealands first Capital

Okiato, today's Russell, was surveyed directly after the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and became a landing post for travelers coming from New South Wales, Australia. It was thought to be the first Capital of New Zealand before it became its own separate colony in 1841. 

1860 · First Taranaki War

The First Taranaki War was an armed conflict between the Māori people and the New Zealand Government over rights of land ownership. It was fought by more than 3,500 troops from Australia, as well as over one-thousand Māori. Total losses among the two armies are estimated to be around 440 men. The war ended in a ceasefire, although the British claimed that they had won the war.,
