    1861 · The Battle of Manassas

    Age 5

    The Battle of Manassas is also referred to as the First Battle of Bull Run. 35,000 Union troops were headed towards Washington D.C. after 20,000 Confederate forces. The McDowell's Union troops fought with General Beauregard's Confederate troops along a little river called Bull Run.

    Abraham Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation, declaring slaves in Confederate states to be free.

    Age 7

    The Battle of Gettysburg involved the largest number of casualties of the entire Civil war and is often described as the war's turning point. Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers lost their lives during the three-day Battle. To honor the fallen soldiers, President Abraham Lincoln read his historic Gettysburg Address and helped those listening by redefining the purpose of the war.

    Name Meaning

    English (Cheshire and Lancashire): variant of Case , or, alternatively, perhaps a metonymic occupational name for a maker of boxes, from Middle English cashe ‘box, chest to keep wares in’ (Old French casse).

    Irish (Tipperary and Wexford): in Ireland, Cash and Cass may derive from the epithet cas ‘curly-haired’, or be a variant of Casey . However, it is more likely to be the English surname.

    Americanized form of German Kirch or Kirsch .
