Name Meaning

The last name is likely to come from the secular name Koloda. In Rus, this word had several meanings: «a thick log, some products made of it — trough, chiseled boat, hewn beam», as well as «clumsy, stodgy person». Therefore, the nickname could be related both to profession and personal qualities of its bearer. A child could have been named Kolodoy to avoid being found by evil spirits. The family name was formed using the suffix -in, which is characteristic for names and nicknames ending with -a (-ya).

The last name is most common in Russia, especially in the Ryazan and Tambov Regions and in the Republic of Buryatia. It is also often found in Kazakhstan and Belarus.

The first written information about the surname appeared in the mid 15th century — at that time, Danilo Osipovich Kolodin lived in Kashin town. The later sources mentioned a townsman Satka Kolodin from Zaraysk (1624) and a Don Cossack Senka Kolodin (1688).
