1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

1898 · War with the Spanish

After the explosion of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor in Cuba, the United States engaged the Spanish in war. The war was fought on two fronts, one in Cuba, which helped gain their independence, and in the Philippines, which helped the US gain another territory for a time.

1919 · The Eighteenth Amendment

The Eighteenth Amendment established a prohibition on all intoxicating liquors in the United States. As a result of the Amendment, the Prohibition made way for bootlegging and speakeasies becoming popular in many areas. The Eighteenth Amendment was then repealed by the Twenty-first Amendment. Making it the first and only amendment that has been repealed.

Name Meaning

Short form of Katherine (or any of its variant spellings), reflecting the French pronunciation with -t- for -th-, which was also usual in medieval England. This short form has been continuously popular since the Middle Ages, and is now frequently used as an independent given name. It was used by Shakespeare for two important characters: the daughter of the King of France who is wooed and won by King Henry V , and the ‘shrew’ in The Taming of the Shrew.
