Brief Life History of Paul

When Paul Hindemith was born on 16 November 1895, in Hanau, Hesse-Nassau, Prussia, Germany, his father, Robert Rudolf Emil Hindemith, was 25 and his mother, Marie Sophie Warnecke, was 27. He married Gertrud Rottenberg in 1924. He immigrated to São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil in 1954 and lived in Germany in 1963. He died on 28 December 1963, in Höchst, Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany, at the age of 68, and was buried in Cimetière La Chiésaz, La Chièsaz, Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz, Vaud, Switzerland.

1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

A landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities if the segregated facilities were equal in quality. It's widely regarded as one of the worst decisions in U.S. Supreme Court history.

1897 · Seattle Grows Quickly

The Klondike gold rush started in 1896 in Canada, but by 1897 as miners started moving and following the gold it caused for Seattle to rapidly grow as more miners joined the search for gold.

1913 · The Woolworth Building Opens as the Tallest Building in the World

At 792 feet above Broadway, the Woolworth Building became the tallest building in the world and held the record for 17 years. The Woolworth Building was overshadowed by the Chrysler Building at 1,046 feet in 1930 and the Empire State Building at 1,454 feet in 1931. Retailer and mogul Frank W. Woolworth commissioned the Woolworth Building in 1910 with the intent of his namesake building to be the tallest in the world. The 13 million dollar project was financed in cash by Woolworth which allowed him freedoms in the design and construction of the ornate, gothic building. An opening ceremony was held on April 24, 1913 at which President Woodrow Wilson pressed a button from the White House and lit the historic building in New York City.

Name Meaning

From Latin Paulus, a Roman family name, originally a nickname meaning ‘small’, used in the post-classical period as a given name. Pre-eminently this is the name of the saint who is generally regarded, with St Peter , as co-founder of the Christian Church. Born in Tarsus, and originally named Saul, he was both a Roman citizen and a Jew, and at first found employment as a minor official persecuting Christians. He was converted to Christianity by a vision of Christ while on the road to Damascus, and thereafter undertook extensive missionary journeys, converting people, especially Gentiles, to Christianity all over the eastern Mediterranean. His preaching aroused considerable official hostility, and eventually he was beheaded at Rome in about ad 65 . He is the author of the fourteen epistles to churches and individuals which form part of the New Testament. It has been in continuous use in the British Isles since the 16th century.
