Brief Life History of Adelia

When Adelia Higley was born on 15 January 1794, in Becket, Berkshire, Massachusetts, United States, her father, Josiah Higley III, was 31 and her mother, Deliverance Carpenter, was 30. She married George Grant Redden on 8 December 1816, in Hiram, Portage, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 6 daughters. She lived in Pottawattamie, Iowa, United States in 1850 and Grantsville, Tooele, Utah, United States in 1860. She died on 13 February 1864, in Utah, United States, at the age of 70.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

Name Meaning

English: habitational name from Highley (Shropshire), recorded as Hugelei in 1086, from an Old English personal name Hugga + Old English lēah ‘woodland clearing’. The modern form Highley is probably due to folk etymology (see Highley ).
