When Gusta Mariane Svendsen was born on 18 December 1871, in Stangnes, Hedmark, Norway, her father, Lars Svendsen Kisen, was 26 and her mother, Maren Thorine Gulbrandsdatter Ingelsrud, was 20. She married Olof Nilsson Bergerud on 28 June 1892, in Eidskog, Hedmark, Norway. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 6 daughters. She died on 20 March 1955, in her hometown, at the age of 83.
