1883 · Mining Boom

Age 69

In 1883, there was a mining boom in Northern Ontario when mineral deposits were found near Sudbury. Thomas Flanagan was the blacksmith for the Canadian Pacific Railway that noticed the deposits in the river.

Name Meaning

Dutch: of uncertain origin, possibly from slagt ‘slaughtering (of animals)’, hence an occupational name for a slaughterer, or a derogatory nickname from a variant of sleght, slecht ‘bad’, ‘evil’, ‘wicked’
