When Elias Higbee was born on 23 October 1795, in Galloway Township, Gloucester, New Jersey, United States, his father, Isaac Higbee, was 34 and his mother, Sophia Clarinda Somers, was 29. He married Sarah Elizabeth Ward on 10 September 1818, in Tate Township, Clermont, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Fulton, Hamilton, Ohio, United States in 1830 and Hancock, Illinois, United States in 1840. He died on 8 June 1843, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States, at the age of 47, and was buried in Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds, Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, United States.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

Tate Township was established in June of 1805, formed from Ohio and Williamsburg Townships.

English (London): perhaps a habitational name, but no place of this name is known in Britain. The proposed etymology from an Old English personal name, Higbert, is equally doubtful.

History: The name was brought to North America in the 1640s from Ivinghoe in Buckinghamshire, England.
