1875 · A Treaty with Hawaii

After the explosion of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor in Cuba, the United States engaged the Spanish in war. The war was fought on two fronts, one in Cuba, which helped gain their independence, and in the Philippines, which helped the US gain another territory for a time.

1 Scandinavian: unexplained.2 German: topographic and habitational name from either of two places called Vorberg or from Vorberg-Heide in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. According to one opinion the original form is Vorwerk and denotes the operating farm (barns and stables) in front (‘vor’) of a manor house in a parklike setting.
