Name Meaning

Latinized form of an old Slavonic personal name composed of stan ‘government’ + slav ‘glory’. St Stanislas Szczepanowski ( 1030–79 ) was a bishop of Cracow who was killed by King Bolesaw the Cruel of Poland. The name recurs in a Sussex family named Browne from the 16th to the 18th century. It is still found occasionally in the English-speaking world, used sometimes as an Anglicized form of Irish Anéislis .
