    Upper Volta gains independence. Maurice Yameogo becomes president.

    1965

    Constitution is Suspended. A crisis erupts between the government and the labor unions. At the request of the labor unions, General Sangoulé Lamizana, then army chief of staff, assumes power on January 3rd, 1966.

    1978

    Reintroduction of democratic elections. Dictator Lamizana wins the presidency. Two years later he is ousted in a bloodless military coup. two additional coups follow during the next 33 months.
