1971 · Warkworth Satellite Station

Age 4

New Zealand's main Satellite communications ground station was built 5km (about 3.1 miles) from the small town of Warkworth. It remained active until 2008, when it was dismantled because of access to smaller, more accurate means of communication.

1972 · Equal Pay Act

Age 5

The practice of equal pay was extended to the private sector thanks to the Equal Pay Act which eliminated gender discrimination in all sectors of paid employment.

1982 · Re introducing the Maori Language

Age 15

Many years leading up to the 1982, there were growing concerns among the Māori that their language was endangered because very few young people were able to speak it. The Te Kōhanga Reo focused on total immersion in the Māori language for preschool children. Today, everyone in New Zealand is taught Maori and is one of the three official languages used in New Zealand.
