Brief Life History of Carter Bosworth

Carter Bosworth Storr (1910–1995) was a Canadian teacher, author, and illustrator born in Ottawa. He earned a B.A. from Queens College, Toronto, and specialised in teaching art to children. In 1938, he traveled to New Zealand as an exchange teacher, giving lectures and training educators. He also wrote and illustrated books, including "Child Art: Its Form and Development" (1939). After returning to Canada, he worked for Dent & Sons, illustrating the "Canadian Camper Series". He later taught in the U.S. before settling back in Canada, where he passed away in Ottawa in 1995.

1912 · The Girl Scouts

Like the Boy Scouts of America, The Girl Scouts is a youth organization for girls in the United States. Its purpose is to prepare girls to empower themselves and by acquiring practical skills.

1917 · Women Given the Right to Vote in New York

Voters in New York approve a bill giving women the right to vote. This is passed three years prior to the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution which allowed women to vote nationwide.

1934 · Alcatraz Island Becomes Federal Penitentiary

Alcatraz Island officially became Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on August 11, 1934. The island is situated in the middle of frigid water and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay, which deemed it virtually inescapable. Alcatraz became known as the toughest prison in America and was seen as a “last resort prison.” Therefore, Alcatraz housed some of America’s most notorious prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud. Due to the exorbitant cost of running the prison, and the deterioration of the buildings due to salt spray, Alcatraz Island closed as a penitentiary on March 21, 1963.
