English (Norfolk and Suffolk): from the Middle English personal name Toky, Toke, Tuke, Tuk(ke) (Old Danish Tōki, Tūki, Tukk(a)). This was probably a pet form of Old Norse Thorkell (Old Danish Thurkell; see Turkel ), and perhaps of other names in Thor- or Thur- with the Old Norse hypocoristic suffix -ki. An additional source of Tōki may have been a nickname, Old Norse tóki ‘simpleton’. It was popular in Scandinavia partly perhaps because it was that of a master archer in the Icelandic Jómsvíkinga saga.
