Name Meaning

English: habitational name from Leighfield in Rutland, which is recorded as Leghe in 1266 and Leyefeld' in 1369, or one of the many minor places with similar names, such as Leyfield and Leyfield Farm, both in Yorkshire, and Leyfield in Nottinghamshire. The Rutland placename derives from Old English lēah ‘woodland clearing’ with later addition of Middle English feld ‘open country, land for pasture or cultivation’. The other placenames may derive from Old English lǣge ‘fallow’ + feld ‘open country’.
