Name Meaning

Some characteristic forenames: French Andre, Marcel, Monique, Pierre, Leonce, Lucien, Alcide, Cecile, Emile, Adrien, Camille.

French: variant of Trahant or Trahand (and, in North America, an altered form of the former), a metonymic occupational name for a silkworker who drew out the thread from the cocoons, from a derivative of the verb traire ‘to draw or stretch’. Compare Strong .

History: The LA branches of the Trahan family trace their descent from Guillaume Trahan, from Montreuil-Bellay in Maine-et-Loire, who arrived in Acadia in the 17th century; he married Madeleine Brun in Port-Royal in Acadia (now Annapolis Royal in NS, Canada), c. 1666. At the time of the expulsion of the Acadians (1755–64), his numerous descendants were deported and finally settled principally in the Attakapas country of LA.
