When Joseph Henry Edmundson was born on 16 February 1875, in Central Provinces, India, his father, Major Joseph Edmundson, was 34 and his mother, Marianne Ryall, was 18. He married Annie Isabella Dolbel in 1901, in New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. He lived in Bengal, India in 1875. He died on 12 September 1949, in Bluff, Southland, New Zealand, at the age of 74, and was buried in Park Island Cemetery, Poraiti, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
