John McLean was born in 1838, in Ontario, Canada as the son of William McLean and Hannah Ross. He married Isabella Mcpherson on 26 December 1861, in Grey, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He lived in Owen Sound, Grey, Ontario, Canada in 1871. He died on 3 October 1892, in Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 54, and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia, Lambton, Ontario, Canada.
