1944 · Congress Passes the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Project

Age 5

The Flood Control Act of 1944 was passed and would later be called the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program. It was named after the authors of the program Lewis A. Pick and William Glenn Sloan. It began as two separate plans but they both had the idea for an irrigation system that would help with the flooding of the Missouri River.
1948 · Strategic Air Command Headquarters Established Near Omaha

Age 9

Strategic Air Command Headquarters moved near Omaha in November of 1948. It consisted of both the United States Department of Defense Specified Command and a United States Air Force Major Command. It was responsible for the strategic nuclear strike forces during the Cold War.
1961 · The Buccaneer Arena

Age 22

The Buccaneer Arena was built for the Des Moines Buccaneers ice hockey team before their first season. It was known as the Metro Ice Sports Arena until 2004 when it got its new name. Its presence has sparked the love of ice hockey in the area during its time in the community.
