Brief Life History of Felice Loretto

Obituary for Felice Girardot Lee Felice G. Lee, 91, of Easton, MD, died on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at HeartFields of Easton. She was born on May 9, 1921, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of the late Raymond and Loretto Morrissey Girardot. She attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Detroit and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Detroit having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy. After graduation, Mrs. Lee’s professional interests led her to Washington, DC, and San Francisco, where she worked for the Office of War Information. In 1949, Felice Girardot married Richard Henry Lee. They made their home in New York City and later in Scarsdale, NY. Balancing the demands of family and work, Mrs. Lee found professional satisfaction and recognition during 25 years of service for the United Nations in New York. Among assignments, she served as Editor of the United Nations Yearbook. At the time of her retirement in 1981, she held the office of Director of the Publications Service of the Department of Public Information. In 1982, Felice and her husband, Richard, moved to Talbot County. Felice was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. A dedicated member of the community, Felice served as an officer of the League of Women Voters, president of the Garden Club of the Eastern Shore and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Easton Day Care Center. Felice will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her lifelong interest in world and national affairs, and her love for music and art. Mrs. Lee is survived by two daughters, Felicity Buchanan of Rye, NY, and Elizabeth Lee of Easton; two granddaughters, Caroline Buchanan and Annie Lee; and numerous nephews and nieces. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 1210 S. Washington St., Easton, MD 21601. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 7 pm on Monday, February 25, 2013, at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 200 S. Harrison Street in Easton. Warrant G. Harding died of a heart attack in the Palace hotel in San Francisco.

1928 · The Detroit Zoo

"The Detroit Zoological Society was founded in 1911, but the zoo didn't officially open until August 1, 1928. At the opening ceremony, Mayor John C. Nagel was to speak to the gathered crowd. Arriving late, Nagel parked his car behind the bear dens and as he came rushing around the front. A polar bear leaped from the moat in the den and stood directly in front of Nagel. Unaware how precarious his situation was, Nagel stuck out his hand and walked toward the polar bear joking, """"He's the reception committee. The Detroit Zoo was the first zoo in America with cage-less exhibits and the first zoo to no longer keep elephants because of the harsh winters causing psychological stress on them."
