English: (i) locative name from Middle English haler, denoting someone who lived in a nook of land, i.e. a remote valley or secluded spot. Thus, the name is equivalent to Middle English atte Hale ‘(dweller) at the nook’; see Attale . Names of this type, composed of a topographical term + the suffix -er, are particularly frequent in Sussex, Hants, Surrey, and Kent.
