Altered form of French Guérin (see Guerin ).

In some cases possibly also French (Seine-Maritime): variant of Guerrand, a nickname for a belligerent person or alternatively for a valiant soldier, derived from guerrer ‘to fight’. The surname Guerrant is very rare in France.

History: Daniel Guérin/Guerrant from Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente in Charente-Maritime, France, married Marie L'Orange in Saint-Nazaire in 1697, died in Goochland, VA, in 1721. His name is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society's register of qualified Huguenot ancestors and also in the similar register of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina.
