Samuel Ackerley was born on 16 May 1827, in Runcorn, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom as the son of Samuel Ackerly and Mary Ward. He married Charlotta West on 17 May 1855, in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 3 daughters. He immigrated to Utah, United States in 1855 and lived in Prairie du Chien, Crawford, Wisconsin, United States in 1870 and Fayette Township, Decatur, Iowa, United States for about 20 years. He died on 11 November 1901, in Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa, United States, at the age of 74, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Decatur, Iowa, United States.
