1906 · Saving Food Labels

The first of many consumer protection laws which ban foreign and interstate traffic in mislabeled food and drugs. It requires that ingredients be placed on the label.

1919 · The Chicago Race Riot of 1919

During the Chicago race riot, which was raised by racial conflicts throughout Chicago, thirty-eight people died (23 black and 15 white) and over five hundred were injured. It is considered the worst of the approximately 25 riots during the Red Summer and was the worst race riot in Illinois.

1925 · The Goodman Theatre

The Goodman Theatre was founded as a tribute to the Chicago playwright Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, who died in the Great Influenza Pandemic in 1918. The theater was funded by his parents, who donated $250,000 to the Art Institute of Chicago. The first theater was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw and its opening ceremony was performed on October 20.
