When Larry Dean Van Aman was born on 21 June 1933, in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan, United States, his father, Carl John Van Aman, was 25 and his mother, Dorothy Mae (Helen) Hoag, was 24. He immigrated to Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, United States in 1938 and lived in Representative District 4, Oahu, Hawaii, United States in 1940. He died on 28 December 2016, in Reno, Washoe, Nevada, United States, at the age of 83, and was buried in Oakhurst, Madera, California, United States.

1934 · Alcatraz Island Becomes Federal Penitentiary

Alcatraz Island officially became Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on August 11, 1934. The island is situated in the middle of frigid water and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay, which deemed it virtually inescapable. Alcatraz became known as the toughest prison in America and was seen as a “last resort prison.” Therefore, Alcatraz housed some of America’s most notorious prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud. Due to the exorbitant cost of running the prison, and the deterioration of the buildings due to salt spray, Alcatraz Island closed as a penitentiary on March 21, 1963. 

1935 · The FBI is Established

The Bureau of Investigation's name was changed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help citizens know that the Government is helping protect from threats both domestically and abroad.

1955 · The Civil Rights Movement Begins

The civil rights movement was a movement to enforce constitutional and legal rights for African Americans that the other Americans enjoyed. By using nonviolent campaigns, those involved secured new recognition in laws and federal protection of all Americans. Moderators worked with Congress to pass of several pieces of legislation that overturned discriminatory practices.
