1 English: nickname for an idle dreamer, from Middle English cokayne ‘cloud-cuckooland’, name of an imaginary paradise (Old French (pays de) cocaigne, from Middle Low German kōkenje, a diminutive of kōke ‘cake’, since in this land the houses were supposed to be made of cake).2 Americanized spelling of French Cocagne, from an Occitan word meaning ‘profit’, ‘advantage’, used as a personal name from the Middle Ages.
