John Groening was born on 23 February 1838, in Baden. He married Ernestine Emilie Bauer about 1860, in Berlinchen, Soldin, Brandenburg, Prussia, Germany. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Belle Prairie Township, Fillmore, Nebraska, United States in 1880. He died on 14 November 1899, at the age of 61.

On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not they wanted to allow slavery within their borders. This Act repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
