The civil rights movement was a movement to enforce constitutional and legal rights for African Americans that the other Americans enjoyed. By using nonviolent campaigns, those involved secured new recognition in laws and federal protection of all Americans. Moderators worked with Congress to pass of several pieces of legislation that overturned discriminatory practices.
When the American Civil War broke out, Delaware remained loyal to the Union. When President Lincoln tried to set emancipation in the state in 1861, he was turned down by the legislature. They refused to ratify the 13th Amendment. The remaining slaves in the state though, were set free upon the ratification of the 13th Amendment.
