WEWS-TV first signed on the air on December 17 and was the first commercially licensed television station in Ohio. It has been the only station in Cleveland that has held the same frequency, ownership, and call letters since its initial sign-on. The first broadcast on the station was a Christmas pageant run by the Cleveland Press.

The Boddie Recording Company was a musical recording company that helped low income artists put their music on records. It was started by Thomas and Louise Boddie out of their home in 1959 and operated until 1984. It offered a full-service operation that no one in the city could match.
