William Dunn was born on 29 April 1738, in St. Philip's Parish, Charleston, South Carolina, British Colonial America as the son of John Ross Dunn Esq. and Katherine. He married Mary Smith in 1754, in Guilford, North Carolina, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Moore, North Carolina, United States for about 10 years. He died in 1811, in Hopkinsville, Christian, Kentucky, United States, at the age of 73.
