1905 · Squaw Mountain Fire Lookout

Age 2

In 1905, a fire lookout tower (among the first of its kind) was constructed in Piscataquis County on Squaw Mountain. Due to Maine's abundance of lumber and paper mills, it was essential that a system be developed to help spot fires as quickly as possible.
1928 · Camden Public Library is Opened

Age 25

The citizens of Camden, Maine had voted (in 1896) to establish a free public library in the town. The land for the library to be built on was donated by Mary Louise Curtis Bok in 1916. After years of fundraising and construction, the cornerstone was finally laid on August 17, 1927. The library opened on June 11, 1928. The library remains open to this day, and is now considered a National Historic Landmark.

French: of uncertain derivation; perhaps a nickname from a regional word for the vine weevil; alternatively, it could be from a pet form of the personal names Élise or Elizabeth.
