When Ludwig IX. von Hessen-Darmstadt was born on 16 December 1719, in Darmstadt, Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany, his father, Landgraf Ludwig VIII. von Hessen-Darmstadt, was 28 and his mother, Gräfin Charlotta Christina Magdalena Johanna von Hanau-Lichtenberg, was 19. He married Landgravine Henrietta Carolina Christiana Louisa von Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld on 12 August 1741, in Zweibrücken, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 6 April 1790, in Pirmasens, Pirmasens, Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany, at the age of 70, and was buried in Pirmasens, Pirmasens, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
