1872 · The First National Park

Yellowstone National Park was given the title of the first national park by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. It is also believed to be the first national park in the world.
1872 · The Amnesty Act

A federal law which reversed most of the penalties on former Confederate soldiers by the Fourteenth Amendment. The Act affected over 150,000 troops that were a part of the Civil War.
1872 · The Soldiers and Sailors Monument

The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a monument located in Downtown Detroit that was built in honor of those who lost their lives during the Civil War. The lowest sections of the monument have eagles with raised wings that guide the eye upward. The next section up has four male figures representing the Navy, Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery branches of the United States Army. Above them are four female figures that represent Victory, History, Emancipation, and Union. Capping the monument, an Amazon figure brandishes a sword in her right hand and a shield in her other. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
