1906 · Saving Food Labels

Age 2

The first of many consumer protection laws which ban foreign and interstate traffic in mislabeled food and drugs. It requires that ingredients be placed on the label.
1917 · Women Given the Right to Vote in New York

Age 13

Voters in New York approve a bill giving women the right to vote. This is passed three years prior to the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution which allowed women to vote nationwide.

13 million people become unemployed after the Wall Street stock market crash of 1929 triggers what becomes known as the Great Depression. President Herbert Hoover rejects direct federal relief.

The first two are named from Old English æscen ‘growing with ash trees’ + dūn ‘hill’. The last may be from an Old English personal name Æsc or Old English æsc ‘ash tree’ + dūn ‘hill’.
