1918

Age 5

Poland becomes independent. Poland becomes independent as WWI comes to an end. The country was devastated by the war. Approximately one million Poles died. All Polish institutions had to be rebuilt as the country once again formed a nation. The official boundaries are not set until 1923.
1919

Age 6

The Treaty of Versailles gives Poland western Prussia, thus getting access to the Baltic Sea.
1939

Age 26

Nazi Germany invades Poland. Beginning of World War II as the United Kingdom declares war on Germany in response to the invasion. The Soviet Union invades from the east. Germany and the Soviet Union divide Poland between them and treat Polish citizens, particularly Jews, with extreme brutality.

Polish: habitational name for someone from Tylice in Toruń voivoideship or Tylisz in Nowy Sącz voivodeship, named with tył ‘back’.
