1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

1901 · Spindletop Oilfield Discovered

Spindletop, located south of Beaumont, becomes the first major oil well to be discovered in Texas. Other fields were discovered in shortly after, which ultimately led to the highly impactful "oil boom".

Name Meaning

English: variant of Hackett with palatalization of /k/ to /tʃ/. Although it is formally possible, there is no evidence to support a derivation from Middle English hachet(te) ‘small axe’ (Old French hachete).
