1961 · Seattle Space Needle is Built

Construction on the Seattle Space Needle was constructed on April 17, 1961, and was opened on April 21, 1962. It was built for the World’s Fair in 1962. The space needle is an observation tower that is iconic to Seattle and a landmark of the Pacific Northwest. It was meant to only be lite for 75 nights per year or less to reduce light pollution. On September 11, 2001 the lights of the space were left on for 11 days straight.
