The primary targets of the proceedings were officers of the Polish Army who had served during  the first or second World Wars. In order to imprison these individuals, the communist authorities falsely accused these individuals of conspiring with British and American intelligence services. The accused generals were sentenced to life imprisonment and over 20 officers were executed. The remaining prisoners were set free in 1956 after the end of Stalinism in Poland.
