When William Sparks was born on 5 February 1834, in Yancey, North Carolina, United States, his father, Jeremiah "Myra" Sparks, was 23 and his mother, Rachel McKinney, was 20. He died on 19 April 1878, in Mitchell, North Carolina, United States, at the age of 44, and was buried in Green Young Cemetery, Bakersville, Mitchell, North Carolina, United States.

1836 · Remember the Alamo

Being a monumental event in the Texas Revolution, The Battle of the Alamo was a thirteen-day battle at the Alamo Mission near San Antonio. In the early morning of the final battle, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. Quickly being overrun, the Texian Soldiers quickly withdrew inside the building. The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.

U.S. acquires vast tracts of Mexican territory in wake of Mexican War including California and New Mexico.

1853 · First State Fair

The first state fair in North Carolina was held in Raleigh and was put on by the North Carolina State Agricultural Society in 1853. The fair has been continuous except for during the American Civil War and Reconstruction and WWII.

variant of Spark , with post-medieval excrescent -s.

possibly a nickname from the plural form of Middle English spark ‘fiery particle’, perhaps given to a blacksmith.
