Age 12

Rebels fight for independence from Portugal. The fight becomes more organized in the 1960s, when the Mozambicans form the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique, shortened to Frelimo.
1965

Age 15

An anti-Frelimo resistance group,Renamo, is set up by white Rhodesian officers as clashes with Frelimo forces escalate and Mozambique imposes economic sanctions against Rhodesia.
1975

Age 25

Mozambique becomes independent. The capital changes its name from Lourenco Marques to Maputo.
