Brief Life History of John Robert

Mr. May was a graduate of Ouachita High School and ULM, with a degree in geography. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed with the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington, D.C., as well as the Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, MS for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He loved gospel music and had an extensive knowledge of U.S. history, particularly the Civil War and World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Lois May; and one brother, Dwight May. He was survived by his wife, Delores Womack May of Grayson; two step-children, Randy Etheridge and wife Dottie, Jan Smith and husband Randy, all of Grayson; two brothers, Ronald G. May and wife Joyce of West Monroe, Kenneth H. May and wife Alice of Monroe; one sister, Linda McWatters of Shreveport; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

1955 · The Civil Rights Movement Begins

The civil rights movement was a movement to enforce constitutional and legal rights for African Americans that the other Americans enjoyed. By using nonviolent campaigns, those involved secured new recognition in laws and federal protection of all Americans. Moderators worked with Congress to pass of several pieces of legislation that overturned discriminatory practices.
