He married Brittanna Elizabeth Mayo on 31 October 1833, in Weakley, Tennessee, United States. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 3 daughters. He immigrated to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States in 1852 and lived in Utah, Utah, United States in 1860 and Utah, United States in 1870. He registered for military service in 1855. He died on 4 March 1896, in Mount Carmel, Kane, Utah, United States, at the age of 82, and was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel, Kane, Utah, United States.

The battle has often been overshadowed by events from the Mexican–American War, But the Alamo gradually became known as a national battle site and later named an official Texas State Shrine.
