Catherine Hipsher was born in 1800, in Pennsylvania, United States as the daughter of Dorothy Smith. She married Peter DeGear on 4 November 1817, in Scioto, Ohio, United States. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 7 daughters. She died on 8 May 1839, in Ohio, United States, at the age of 39.

1800 · Movement to Washington D.C.

While the growth of the new nation was exponential, the United States didn’t have permanent location to house the Government. The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years. Ultimately during the Presidency of John Adams, the Capital found a permanent home in the District of Columbia.

Name Meaning

Jewish (Ashkenazic): artificial name from an inflected form of German hübsch ‘handsome, nice’. The first syllable has been influenced in sound by the Yiddish word hipsh ‘considerable, sizeable’.
