Civil War. Rafael Angel Calderon Guradia refuses to step down for election winner Otilio Ulate. Don Pepe Figueres Ferrer leads the revolution against Calderon and topples the government after 40 days of fighting.

1987

The Central American countries sign a peace plan. Devised by Costa Rican president Oscar Arias Sanchez, it is signed by the Central American countries of Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala which have been in the midst of civil wars. Arias wins the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
