    Altered form of German Franziskus, which is derived from the Latin personal name Franciscus (see Francis ). Compare Francisco .

    South African: from the Latin personal name Franciscus (see Francis ). This surname is rare in South Africa.

    History: The progenitor of many of the Americans with the surname Franciscus was Ludwig Christophel Franciscus (also Frantziscus), a German from the Palatinate, who arrived in PA in 1710. Some of his descendants changed the surname to Francisco or to different shortened forms.
