from the Middle English personal name Hicock, Hecock, a pet form of Hick (itself a rhyming pet form of Rickard ‘Richard’), and equivalent to Hitchcock . In Hecok the vowel has been lowered and lengthened in the open syllable (a typical development in northern England and the North Midlands), hence the later spelling Heacock. Hicock has generally survived in the variant Hickox .
